Biomechanics of locomotion

The PhysioPad – Wedge Pad supports hoof biomechanics, by supporting the frog, stimulating proprioceptors, dissipating energy, promoting a heel-first landing, aligning the distal phalanges (phalanges), improving blood circulation and supporting the heel expansion.

Using proprioceptors, horses, like humans, can sense the position and movement of individual body parts at any time - even with their eyes closed. They help control the force with which the respective limbs are moved.

Proprioceptors are receptors or depth sensors (nerve cells) that inform the brain about body movement and position. They are specialised sensors in the body that provide information about the position and movement of body parts in space. They are mainly located in the muscles, tendons and joints and play an important role in body perception and movement control.

Proprioceptors allow our brains to accurately perceive the position and movement of body parts in space, even without visual feedback. This ability is important for balance, coordination and precise execution of movements - for example, when walking or playing sports.

Proprioceptors also play a crucial role in horses to ensure balance, coordination of movements and body awareness. These sensors are especially important in horses because they carry a large body weight and often need to move on uneven terrain or in rapid movements and changes of direction, whether in training, at pasture or in sports activities such as dressage, jumping and racing.

The main tasks of the proprioceptors in horses are:

  • Coordination of movement
  • Balance and stability
  • Avoidance of injuries
  • Adaptation to ground conditions
  • ‘Feedback’ to the rider

This sole provides optimal support and absorption during movement and relieves pressure on the walls and toe area. Its combination with a good carrying filling material can have an even greater effect on the comfort and relief of the joints and internal structures of the hoof.
